Well from Bristol you can take an X14 bus (FREE on an English Diamond Concessionary pass) over the sea to Wales Monday to Saturday every daytime hour. See Traveline South West for the strange route and stop variations of the two operators - Stagecoach in South Wales and First Bristol - each takes about one hour.
Chepstow has a variety of shops (and charity shops), charm-filled little streets and good local museum. The great Norman and later medieval Castle, set on a cliff above the Wye is one of the most special in Britain. From Chepstow there are a variety of walks out along the river Wye and into the Forest of Dean (back in England).
You can also cycle all the way (about 13 miles/20 Kms)and Chepstow is a centre of Sustrans routes.
